Office Tower facade design #1 - Shenzhen (China)

Architectural project (Beijing)

The Client came to us with the complete architectural project for an office tower in Shenzhen, South China, but wanted to have a facade design different from the original project. The tower is the headquarter of a Chinese producer of electronic devices, mainly for households, but also cellphones and industrial equippment.

Upon given floorplans and senctions and a structure which couldn't be changed, this project is only about facade design. The here showcasd two options work with different approaches.

Option #1 applies prefabricated facade elements on north- and south elevation while east and west elevation remain relatively closed concrete walls with holes for window stripes. Due to the tropical weather conditions in South China, a southward orientated glazing should be shaded in order to provide a passive contribution to indoor air-conditioning.

The facade elements go over 3 floors which gives them a vertical appearance. In order to respond to the environmental conditions, the elements on the south side of the tower have been developed in three dimensions with a bent integrated glazing, so that they are practically self-shading, because the sun at noon time (at the Zenit) can't hit the glass at all.

The north elevation works with the same facade elemens that go over three floors, but here they have no shading effect, hence they are only two-dimensional.
